Family joyfully running through a sunlit field with arms outstretched.

Oppositional Defiance Program | Houston, Texas

Effective, parent-led treatment for chronic defiance

We work with Houston-area families navigating defiance, behavioral challenges, and high-conflict parent-child dynamics, from our Bellaire office, with telehealth available across PSYPACT-participating states. Parenting a child or adolescent with intense emotions, frequent defiance, or escalating behavior can be exhausting. Many parents feel like they are constantly walking a tightrope between holding boundaries and keeping the peace, and over time the home can start to feel dominated by arguments, power struggles, blow-ups, and ongoing stress. Parent Management Training (PMT) is an evidence-based approach designed to help families step out of these patterns and create more stability, predictability, and follow-through at home.

Parent Management Training (PMT)

PMT is a structured, skills-based model that focuses on helping parents respond more effectively to challenging behaviors in a way that reduces escalation over time. Rather than relying on “more consequences” or trying to reason in the middle of conflict, PMT teaches parents how to reinforce cooperation, increase compliance, reduce attention to unhelpful behavior patterns, and hold boundaries with clarity and consistency. The goal is not perfection. The goal is creating a home environment where expectations are clear, parents feel confident, and kids have the structure and support they need to grow.

PMT can be especially helpful for families navigating Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), chronic defiance, tantrums or emotional blow-ups, verbal or physical aggression, frequent arguing, refusal of routines, or persistent noncompliance at home or school. It is also commonly effective when challenges are compounded by ADHD, anxiety, emotional sensitivity, or neurodivergence, where a child’s behavior may be driven not only by oppositionality, but also by overwhelm, impulsivity, avoidance, or difficulty tolerating distress.

At CBT Texas, we work collaboratively with parents to build practical strategies that can actually be implemented in real life. We help families reduce conflict, increase consistency between caregivers, and develop a clear plan for responding to patterns that have become entrenched over time. The result is often a calmer home environment, fewer power struggles, and more confidence in parenting responses, even when emotions run high.
